ISTAF Berlin

The International Stadium Festival Berlin ( ISTAF ) is a traditional athletics event in Berlin. It is part of the World Challenge, a group of 14 high-profile meetings.

History

The first event under the name ISTAF took place in the German Stadium on July 3, 1921. Since 1937, the ISTAF will be held regularly. During the Second World War and even later, there were 1940 and 1943-48 several ISTAF -less years. After that, it was only 1951/52, and, after the attack on Israeli athletes at the Munich Olympics, 1972/73.

Since 1955, the event is held annually in Berlin's Olympic Stadium. But the event was also in a few years rather than a hall event in Germany Halle, last in 1968. ISTAF four events in the years 1938, 1941, the first after the war in 1949 and 1953 were played in Mommsenstadion. 2002 and 2003 ISTAF took place because of the conversion of the Olympic Stadium at the Friedrich- Ludwig -Jahn -Sportpark.

From 1993 to 1997, the ISTAF belonged to the Golden Four and was the last venue of the four meetings at the same time the final. Subsequently, Berlin was part of the Golden League, was again restored to the status of final resort, except for the years 2002 and 2003 as the Olympic Stadium.

Over the years, 15 world records were set at the ISTAF, including the first two-meter jump in the women 's high jump by Rosemarie Ackermann from the GDR on 26 August 1977. 2004 won the Golden League jackpot in Berlin, the 400 - m- runner Tonique Williams-Darling of the Bahamas and the Swedish triple jumper Christian Olsson. In 2008, the first time ISTAF formed the prelude to the Golden League series and therefore was held on June 1.

Since 2010, the ISTAF part of World Challenge. At the premiere on August 22, 2010, the Kenyan David Rudisha ran in 1:41,09 minutes world record for the 800 meters of the men and thus improved the previous record by 2/ 100 seconds.

2014 was the first time since 1968, again held an indoor ISTAF.

Student competitions

Since 2003, the Competition program of the ISTAF include student competitions. Here you can find the 50 - m- finals of Germany Action looking for the super sprinter for 10 - to 13 -year-old pupils instead. Exceptional also are the 16 x 50 m relay runs for student teams, each with 8 boys and girls.
