Isthmomys

The Isthmusratten ( Isthmomys ) are a living in Central America rodent genus of the group of the New world. It includes two types.

Isthmusratten reach a body length 15-20 cm and a tail length of 16 to 21 centimeters. The coat is yellow-brown or red-brown at the top, the belly and feet are white.

These rodents are found only in Panama and in the extreme northwest of Columbia. They live in mountain forests in 800-1600 meters above sea level. They are primarily bottom dwellers and create trails. They build nests in which they raise their young. Otherwise, little is known about the lifestyle.

There are two types:

  • Isthmomys flavidus lives in western Panama and has a yellow coat.
  • Isthomys pirrensis comes in eastern Panama and adjacent parts of Colombia before. This species has a dark red-brown or fur.

Both species are not endangered according to the IUCN, this item is deprecated.

They are closely related to the Weißfußmäusen ( Peromyscus ), as their sub- genus, they are sometimes performed. The differences lie mainly in the morphology of the penis.
