Istok

Istog ( Albanian: Istogu or Burim or Burimi, Serbian Исток / Istok ) is a town in north- western Kosovo. It is the headquarters of the eponymous greater community, which borders the Republic of Montenegro. It is located about 60 km from the capital Pristina.

Population

The municipality comprises the city itself and about 50 villages. The population is around 72,000 (as of 2011). In the region mainly Albanians live, as well as minorities Bosniaks, Serbs and Roma.

Economy

The economy of the village is dominated by agriculture substantially. 80 % of the population worked in agriculture before 1999.

Due to the border location of the city benefited from the export of fish Istog abroad. Currently employs modern fish plant ( trout ) on the river Istočka around 70 workers. The privatization which took place in 2004, serves as proof of a successful privatization process.

Name

The city's name is derived from the Serbian word Istok, also called Istek, meaning " water source ", which refers to the source of the river Istočka, a tributary of the white drins. The (alternative) Albanian name Burimi has the same meaning.
