Itaguaí

Itaguaí is a municipality in the Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro and is about 13 m above sea level, 75 km west of the capital on the road to Santos (SP). The population in 2011 was approximately 111 171. The area covers approximately 272 km ².

General

Prefect is Mr. Carlo Busatto Junior ( Charlinho ). The neighboring communities of Itaguaí are Mangaratiba, Rio Claro, Pirai, Paracambi, Seropédica and Rio de Janeiro.

Located between the Sepetiba Bay and the Atlantic rain forest city was founded in 1688 and has since 1982 a seaport. One of the main transhipment goods belongs clay. The city is currently trying to force the construction of a metallurgical industry.

In July 2010, the company LLX began ( in 2013 renamed in Prumo ) with the construction of a deepwater port, through which the products of the mining company MMX should be removed. Due to financial problems the entrepreneur Eike Batista sold in October 2013, the majority of this port project at the Mubadala Development Company based in Abu Dhabi and the Dutch Trafigura Group.

Currently Itaguaí is considered one of the poorest areas of the conurbation of the city of Rio de Janeiro. The place is also used by many workers in the industrial Zona Oueste ( Western Zone) of Rio de Janeiro as a bedroom community. In the northeast of the municipality is the village of Sepetiba here are several docks.
