Itajaí is a city in the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina on the Atlantic coast at the mouth of Itajaí.

History

The city was founded on 15 June 1860. A large part of the population at that time were German and Portuguese emigrants. Already 1841 - 1842 had failed a Belgian colony founding.

Economy and Harbour

The Port of Itajaí is the largest port in the state of Santa Catarina and the second largest in Brazil. The nearest airport is the International Airport Minister Victor Konder at Navegantes.

Itajaí has a sea port, which is operated by a private company. From here, goods from the State of Santa Catarina are shipped all over the world. These are textile products, shoes and around meat in refrigerated containers. In 2008 7.008.621 t of container units and 280 435 TEUs (Source Porto de Itajaí ). The container terminal of TECONVI is considered one of the largest terminals in the state. In December 2008, the port facilities of Itajaí were badly damaged by a heavy rainfall. Since 2007 there are on the opposite side of the river in Navegantes also a container terminal PORTONAVE of now is in direct competition with TECONVI.
