Italian Horse Protection Association

Italian Horse Protection Association ( IHA) is the only center in Italy, which houses abused and according to the Italian Law 189/2004 against the mistreatment of animals confiscated horses and cared for their rehabilitation.

Objective

Abused Horses

The Italian Horse Protection Association ( IHA) operates under the primary objective of horses that have been seized under the Italian law 189/2004 ( cruelty to animals ), to provide a physical and mental recreation. In addition, IHP want in society to raise awareness of the biology of behavior characteristics and needs of horses. IHP is of the opinion that the needs of horses often - be misunderstood, and they are therefore treated or kept in an inappropriate way - albeit in good faith.

Infectious anemia Equine

Another field of activity of the IHP is for real characteristics of the horse disease Infectious anemia Equine (also called Equine Infectious Anemia, EIA ) to raise awareness. The Infectious anemia Equine is in the opinion of IHP a disease that is considered to be far more dangerous than it actually is; IHP has based its opinion in this case on the latest scientific findings, which are also formed in a scientific cooperation between IHP and the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Perugia. With the approval of the local veterinary authorities and in accordance with the applicable standards IHP is the only active center, in the horse, in which the infectious anemia Equine was detected by means of the Coggins tests for horses can live under suitable conditions in an isolated paddock.

Location

The organization is located in the municipality of Montaione, Province of Florence, in Italy. There, the captured animals living on 100 hectares freely, but under constant scrutiny by many volunteers and veterinarians, support the IHP.

Scientific Cooperation

IHP works in cooperation with the Veterinary Faculty of the University of Perugia in the field of research on infectious anemia and equine ethology of the horse, as well as with the Veterinary Faculty of the University of Pisa in the field of scientific internships with horses at liberty.
