Italian Republican Party

The Partito Repubblicano Italiano (PRI, Republican Party of Italy ) is a liberal party in Italy.

Originally founded in 1895, it was forbidden under Benito Mussolini, and was re-established at the end of the Second World War. Today's party received its best results in the parliamentary elections in 1983, where she received 39 seats in parliament.

A special feature of the PRI among Italian parties is to be explained by the high level of education of many voters of organization. In contrast to the Partito Liberal Italiano, who represented liberal positions, the PRI was more center-left and socially liberal to classify.

The PRI was repeatedly involved in Italian governments and presented with Giovanni Spadolini (1981-1982) a Prime Minister.

After the reform of the electoral law, the PRI was initially on the side of the center-left alliance Ulivo to Romano Prodi, 2001 turned the Casa delle Libertà, however, Silvio Berlusconi. Consequence of this change of direction was the elimination of the Movimento Repubblicani Europei, the part of the Ulivo remained.

In the 1999 European elections, the Republicans have formed a connection with the PLI; at the 2004 European elections, they were allied with the right-wing liberal Vittorio Sgarbi.
