Italy at the 1896 Summer Olympics

Italy participated with an athlete at the 1896 Summer Olympics in Athens. The only representative was the engineer Giuseppe Rivabella, which was established for professional reasons in Athens.

In Athens, a second Italian athlete was present, the marathon runner Carlo Airoldi. He had denied the greater part of the route between Milan and Athens on foot. There, however, he was not admitted to the games because he had received a prize at a race from Milan to Barcelona and therefore no longer regarded as amateur.

In addition to three other participating countries Italy remained without a medal.
