Itanhaém (pronounced " Itanja - uh ," Audio listen ) is a town on the coast of the Brazilian state of São Paulo. The city is part of the metropolitan area Baixada Santista to around 55 km to the east port city of Santos. The distance to the state capital São Paulo is about 75 km. Itanhaém has 85 977 inhabitants (2008 ) in an area of 599 km ² - which gives a population density of 152 persons per square kilometer.

The municipality has BALNEARIA the official status of a spa, an Estancia. The economy is dominated by the tourist. Numerous beaches attract visitors mainly from the state capital of São Paulo, with more than 10 million people. In particular, in the 1970s it was fashionable to do in Itanhaém vacation while today rather the further east Guarujá is favored.

In the hilly countryside of the municipal area is dominated by the Atlantic rain forest, the Mata Atlântica. The largest river is the Rio Itanhaém.
