Itanos

Itanos (Greek Ίτανος ( f sg ) ) was an ancient city on the northeast corner of the Greek island of Crete.

The origins of the settlement can be traced back to prehistoric times. However, the heyday of Itanos as a rich port city lay in the classical and Hellenistic antiquity. In the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC Itanos was allied with Egypt, and from the year 70 BC a contract with Egypt was found. In between, from 140 BC, Itanos was allied with Hierapytna ( Ierapetra ) and together with this city ruler over all of eastern Crete.

795 Itanos was destroyed by an earthquake and then rebuilt. In the 15th century deserted the city after the inhabitants were expelled by pirates.

In the course of archaeological excavations, among other things, the remains of a Byzantine Basilica were uncovered. Located near the historic site is located next to two smaller beaches and the beach Erimoupolis Beach. He is frequented mainly by locals on weekends.

In contrast to a few kilometers south palm beach of Vai Itanos is not accessible to tourists.

The nearest villages are PALEKASTRO and Sitia.
