Itaú Unibanco ( Unibanco Banco Itaú SA Múltiplo ) is a Brazilian holding company and bank with headquarters in São Paulo. The company is listed on the Stock Exchange of São Paulo in the financial index IBOVESPA. The company was founded in 2008 from a merger of the two banks Banco Itaú Unibanco and the. It is the largest bank in the southern hemisphere and has 57.5 million customers.

History

The bank was founded since 1924 as Casa Moreira Salles Seção Bancária João Moreira Salles of in Poços de Caldas, State of Minas Gerais. In 1933, his son Walter Moreira Salles went into the bank management with a. After a merger with three regional banks on 15 July 1940, the bank was renamed Banco Moreira Salles. After a merger with Banco Mercantil Agricola in 1967 it was renamed in União de Bancos Brasileiros SA.

As part of the Brazilian economic crisis and the currency reform ( Plano Real) was also taken over the Banco Nacional in 1995. Thus, the Unibanco was the third largest Brazilian bank.

Family

The shares are held by the family Moreira Salles. The patriarch of the family, Walter Moreira Salles, a well-known Brazilian banker, diplomat and minister in Washington, died on 27 February 2001. Whose son, Pedro Moreira Salles was 2006 Executive Director and Vice Chairman of the Board. Former Finance Minister Pedro Malan is chairman and former president of the Central Bank, Arminio Fraga on the Board.
