Iton

The Iton in the town of Evreux

The Iton is a river in France, which runs in Normandy. It rises in the municipality of Mahéru, in the Perche countryside. The Iton drains generally in a northeasterly direction and leads after 132 miles at Acquigny in the Eure. On his way he crosses the departments of Orne and Eure.

Hydrology

In its upper reaches, between Bourth and Franche Ville, Iton was artificially split, namely

  • South over the Bras forcé of Verneuil Verneuil -sur -Avre, where it flows into the Avre, and
  • North on the Bras forcé de Breteuil Breteuil after, to then unite above Condé- sur- Iton back to the main arm.
  • The main arm itself loses itself under the name Iton Morte largely in a wetland and is not until after reunification with its northern branch of adequate water flows.

Another special feature is found in the section of river between Orvaux and Glisolles. There, the Iton suddenly disappears from the surface and runs in underground chalk karst caves. This 10 kilometer long section Iton Sec: called (fr Dry Iton ). In Glisolles the water enters back to the surface, some of it over the karst spring La Fosse aux Dames.
