The main purpose of the project is hydropower generation, hydropower plant to get an installed capacity of 2400 MW. Preparatory work on the dam began in September 2011 and the power plant will be operational in 2018. When completed it will be the largest power plant in Colombia.

Background

A feasibility study was carried out in 1983, but the project was shelved in the 1990s because of an economic crisis. The final designs for the project were completed in 2008 and the contract was awarded on July 8, 2011. Building

As a shut-off a 225 m high Erdschüttdamm is built with a clay core. The volume of the dam will include 19 million cubic meters. The reservoir will have a storage space of 2720 million cubic meters, of which 980 million m³ of usable space. He will be 127 km long and covering an area of 38 km ². To control the water level, the dam will get a spillway with two radial seals with a discharge capacity of 22,600 m³ / s. The hydroelectric power plant operates with a hydraulic head of 197 m and receives eight 307 MW Francis turbines and generators. It is planned to produce an average of 9200 GWh of electricity annually.
