History

Itumbiara was established in 1824, when at the initiative of the then commander of Goiás, Cunha Matos, proposed connecting road between the mining town of Uberaba in Minas Gerais and the city Anhanguera was completed on border river Paranaíba to Goiás. Thanks to favorable conditions for agriculture and cattle raising, the area was populated and the government established at this point a customs station. Soon the chapel of Santa Rita was built, so that the place " Porto de Santa Rita ", was popularly called short only " Porto ".

During the government of President Afonso Pena in 1909 the still existing suspension bridge was opened across the river Paranaíba and Santa Rita do Paranaíba was elevated to a parish. The engineer Inácio Pais Leme, designer of the 40-km road between Santa Rita do Paranaíba and Cachoeira Dourada, launched in 1943 with the idea to rename the church in " Itumbiara ", which in the Tupi - Guarani language " caminho da cachoeira " ( German: Off means the waterfall ). This proposal was approved by the government and implemented as of December 31, 1943.

In 1966, the city became the seat of the diocese was Itumbiara.
