Ituri Rainforest

The Ituri Rainforest is a rainforest area in Orientale province in the east of DR Congo. The name derives from the area is the rainforest by flowing river Ituri, which opens only during the Aruwimi and finally into the Congo.

The area covers 63,000 km ² and lies between 0 ° and 3 ° N and 27 ° and 30 ° E. The Ituri Rainforest is at an altitude of about 700 to 1,000 meters. The average temperature is about 31 ° C and the average humidity around 85 %.

About one-fifth of the forest is protected by the UNESCO World Heritage Okapi Wildlife Reserve. The eastern foothills of the Ituri forest regulations reach Uganda and stand there with the Semliki National Park under protection. The forest is also home to the Mbuti Pygmies. He was first traversed in 1887 by a European, the African explorer Henry Morton Stanley on his Emin Pasha Expedition.
