Ivan Bilibin

Ivan Yakovlevich Bilibin (Russian: Иван Яковлевич Билибин; * 4 Augustjul / 16 August 1876greg in the village Tarchowka near Sankt Petersburg, .. † February 7, 1942 in Leningrad) was a Russian, and later Soviet, painter, book illustrator and theater practitioners. He was a member of the associations I Iskusstwa ( The Art World ), co-founder of the Soyuz russkih hudožnikov (Association of Russian painter) and from 1937 a member of the Soyuz hudožnikov SSSR ( Painters Association of the USSR ).

Life

Born the son of a military doctor Jakov Ivanovich Bilibin ( Яков Иванович Билибин ) and his wife Varvara Alexandrovna, he attended after school education and the Law Faculty of St. Petersburg University. After graduating in may 1900 he went to Munich, where he completed an apprenticeship with the painter Anton Ažbe. Later he put this under the direction of Ilya Repin continued at the Art Academy in Saint Petersburg. After the formation of association of artists I Iskusstwa, he became an active member. His work for this organization, as well as the entry into the newspaper and book illustration began with a commission for the design of the magazine I Iskusstwa 1899. After the October Revolution of 1917, he left Russia. After living in Cairo and Alexandria, he finally settled down in Paris in 1925. Here he designed private offices and Orthodox churches. Over time, Bilibin was from the Soviet power. In the period 1935-1936 he participated in the design of the Russian Embassy in Paris. He then traveled back to the homeland and settled in Leningrad.

From 1936-1941 Bilibin taught at the All-Russian Artist Academy and continued his work as an illustrator and stage designer continues. Bilibin died in February 1942 during the Siege of Leningrad.

Private life

1902 Bilibin marries his former student, the painter Marija Jakovlevna Tschembers ( Мария Яковлевна Чемберс ). They have their sons Alexander ( 1903) and Ivan (1908 ). In 1912 he married again a former student, the art school graduate Renée Rudolfowna O'Konnel ( Рене Рудольфовна О'Коннель ). In 1923 he married the painter Alexandra Vasilyevna Schtschekatichina - Pototskaya ( Александра Васильевна Щекатихина - Потоцкая ), with whom he has a joint exhibition in 1929 in Amsterdam.
