Ivan Lins

Ivan Guimarães Lins [ ɛvɔn gimɐ'ɾɐĩʃ lɪnʃ ] ( born June 16, 1945 in Rio de Janeiro) is a Brazilian composer, pianist and singer. He moves both in the Música Popular Brasileira ( Brazilian Popular Music ) as well as in jazz fusion area.

Life and work

Lins was born in Rio, but grew up in childhood partly on in Boston, where his father studied at MIT shipbuilding. After his school education at a military school in Rio, he studied at the University of Rio Chemical Engineering ( completion in 1969 ). Besides, he sought a volleyball career, but then discovered his musical talent. At 18, he taught himself to play the piano by ear in and began to play jazz and bossa nova. In 1968 he came with his composition " Até o Amanhecer " in the finals of the Festival since Universitário TV Tupi. In 1969 Elis Regina his song " Madalena ", which ( in Europe ) was a hit. In 1970, she played his composition " O amor é o meu país ", which was later played by the VARIG when boarding of international passengers in their aircraft.

Lins initiated together with Aldir Blanc, Gonzaguinha and other program Som Livre Exportação on the television station TV Globo. Since 1970 albums published regularly by him under his own name as a singer. His 1974 released album Modo livre contained the hit " Abre Alas " with a text by Victor Martins. In 1977 he had another major success with the single " Somos todos esta noite iguais ".

In 1985 he recorded his music in the U.S. and went on tour internationally. For the George Benson album Give Me the Night, he contributed the title Dinorah, Dinorah. Producer Quincy Jones hired him then for his album The Dude, where he " Best Jazz Performance" received a Grammy for Velas in the category. Also on Quincy Jones'Album Back on the block, which also won a Grammy, is a composition by him represented ( Setembro ), and he also contributed compositions for the Manhattan Transfer album in Brazil. With the jazz trumpeter Terence Blanchard, he recorded the album The Heart Speaks, the predominantly contained compositions by Lins ( Lins as a pianist and as a singer ). In 1987 he worked with the Crusaders together to Life in the Modern World (with two of his compositions Life in the Modern World and Some People Will Never Learn ). In 1989 he released his album Love Dance ( another of his standards ), the first on which he sings in English. With Toots Thielemans he took Brazil 1 and 2, with Lee Ritenour and Dave Grusin, the fusion jazz album Harlequin ( 1985).

His compositions were also inter alia interpreted by Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Carmen McRae, Nancy Wilson, Diane Schuur, Patti Austin, Take Six and Sergio Mendes.

As a film composer he provided the soundtrack for the Brazilian film Dois Córregos. As a music producer he promoted singers like Chico César, Lenine and Belo Veloso.

In October 2000 there was a tribute concert at Carnegie Hall in New York in his honor (released as the album A Love Affair with Telarc ).

Lins enjoys in his Brazilian homeland so much popularity that he did not have to shy away from the discussion of the former military regime of the country.
