Ivan Petrovsky

Ivan Georgijewitsch Petrovsky (Russian: Иван Георгиевич Петровский; * Januarjul 5 / 18 January 1901greg in Sevsk in the Bryansk region, .. † January 15, 1973 in Moscow) was a Russian mathematician who, among other things to employed with partial and ordinary differential equations, probability theory and topology of real algebraic curves and surfaces.

Life

Petrovsky studied at the Polytechnic in Sevsk ( diploma 1917) and at the Lomonosov University in Moscow ( completion 1927). From 1930 he was there as a lecturer and from 1933 as a professor. 1951 to 1973 he was rector of the university, a task he took very seriously, making even more about his mathematical work. According to the obituary by Pavel Alexandrov only Lobachevsky came to him in this respect equal among the rectors of Russian universities. Under its Rector, the University was greatly expanded. This was based strictly on scientific achievement and tried to political pressure when choosing counter. From 1943 he also taught at the Steklov Institute, whose Deputy Director he was.

Petrovsky wrote some popular in Russia textbooks. His main area of work were partial differential equations and their applications. For example, he treated the boundary value problems of heat conduction equation and applied methods of algebraic geometry to systems of partial differential equations. It dealt, in part, with his pupil Olga Oleinik also with the theory of real algebraic varieties and scored at the 16th Hilbert problem associated progress. Also at the 19th Hilbert problem ( analyticity of solutions of variational problems ), he made progress.

He was a member of the Soviet Academy of Sciences and " Hero of Socialist Labor " 1969. 1966 he was President of the International Congress of Mathematicians in Moscow since 1946.

Petrovsky had a library of over 30,000 volumes and an encyclopedic knowledge. Among his students count Ladyschenskaja Olga, Olga Oleinik.
