Ivan Sechenov

Ivan Mikhailovich Sechenov (Russian: Иван Михайлович Сеченов, scientific transliteration Ivan Michajlovič Sečenov, .. * 1.jul / August 13 1829greg in Tjoply Stan (now Setschenowo, Nizhny Novgorod Oblast ). † 2.jul / November 15 1905greg. in Moscow) was a Russian physiologist.

Life

Ivan Mikhailovich Sechenov was 1848 graduate of military engineering university in the Russian army. Sechenov studied from 1850 to 1856 medicine at the University of Moscow. He then worked from 1856 to 1860 abroad in Berlin at Johannes Peter Müller, Emil Heinrich Du Bois -Reymond, Hermann von Helmholtz, in Leipzig at Felix Hoppe- Seyler and others, and in Vienna under Carl Ludwig, later also with Claude Bernard in Paris.

Sechenov was from 1870 professor in Odessa, 1876 in St. Petersburg and in Moscow since 1888. He is one of the founders of the Russian physiologist school. His research was mainly neurophysiology.

He first noticed the reflex inhibitory action of certain brain centers ( reflex theory ). He is considered the founder of the "objective psychology". He was also able to work on blood gas analysis.

Honors

According to him, today, the First State Medical Sechenov Moscow State University is named.
