Ivane Javakhishvili

Ivane Javakhishvili (Georgian ივანე ჯავახიშვილი; born April 11, 1876 in Tbilisi, Georgia, † November 18, 1940 ) was a Georgian scientists. He was Professor of History and co-founder of the Tbilisi State University.

Life

He was born the son of the educationalist Aleksandre Javakhishvili, put 1895 on 1 classical Gymnasium in Tbilisi the Abitur. In 1899 he completed his studies at the Faculty of Oriental Languages ​​at the University of Saint Petersburg. There followed a two-year master's graduate studies. In 1898, he learned German in Königsberg.

From 1901 to 1902 he was a visiting scientist at the Friedrich- Wilhelms- University of Berlin, studied with Adolf von Harnack and Karl Krumbacher, translated historiographical sources from Georgian into German. Harnack tried in vain to win him to the University of Berlin.

In 1902 he went with Nikolai Yakovlevich Marr on a scientific expedition to Mount Sinai, secured there old Georgian manuscripts. 1903-1917 Javakhishvili was a lecturer at the Armenian - Georgian -Iranian department in the Faculty of Oriental Languages ​​at the University of Saint Petersburg with the working area Kartwelologie. Javakhishvili was the driving force behind the foundation of the Tbilisi State University. He drew up a foundation plan, recruited patrons. With the Communist Party Javakhishvili lived for decades in feud. In 1924 he supported the August Uprising in Georgia. In 1926, he was therefore replaced as university rector and asked for several years under house arrest. 1936 refused to become a member of the CPSU. There were organized student protests that demanded his removal from the University service. Only later was reconciled with the party Javakhishvili and he was elected to the Parliament of the Georgian Soviet Socialist Republic.

Javakhishvili authored 170 scientific research papers and 20 monographs, including a four-volume history of Georgia, a three-volume history of the Georgian law, a two-volume history of the economy of Georgia, a history of Georgian music, a study on the relationship of the Kartvelian and kauskasischen languages ​​, a Georgian paleography, a Georgian coin and metrology, a Georgian diplomacy and a work on sources and methods of historical research.
