The first written evidence of their presence indicate the year 1201, as the "Village of Ivanovci " (villa hospitalariorum ) was mentioned. Ivanec is first mentioned in the deed, the Ivan Paližna jun. on June 22, 1396 exhibited in Bela, and which was preserved in the copy of Albert de Nagmihal, prior of Vrana and Banus of Croatia and Dalmatia, in 1421, issued in Pakrac. This document confirms that Ivanec was under the ownership of Bela Ivanovci even 600 years ago. It is believed that Ivanec named after the chapel " Sv. Krstitelj Ivan " (St. John the Baptist ) was that Ivanovci built on Ivanec area while they had their headquarters outside the city. After the Ivanovci Croatia left, Ivanec passed into the hands of Marko Talovac in 1438. The Hungarian King Matthias Corvinus sold the Bela - owned by 5600 ducats to the Hungarian Count de Gerse Petheö family, who built the mid-16th century a castle. The counts Erdoedy, the owner of Bela Ivanec and Jurketinec have the castle from 1740 rebuilt, and the family Kukuljević - Sakcinski has awarded the final appearance of the castle. The Kukuljević family left Ivanec to her brother Dr. Josip Saban. The Saban Family was also the last owner to seriously damage the castle in World War II. The ruins were pulled down in 1959.

At that time also the milling industry developed, so that by the mid 19th century to the 70s of the 20th century as much as 18 mills on the brook Bistrica were in operation. The mining industry probably left the deepest mark on the local economy. It is believed that since the start of mining in 1883 until 1945 approximately 3.5 million tonnes of brown coal were extracted. The mines were closed in 1975, when the state began essential means to get exposure to the industry's development. Sports

Ivanec is a small town with athlete's heart. There are clubs in all areas ( football, handball, basketball, athletics, sport fishing and much more. ).

  • Best known are the handball player of the second division RK Ekol Ivančica. Since the 2005/2006 season, the club plays in the second division, until the last season, he was still top notch. An interesting feature of this club is that he was still an amateur club in his first promotion to the elite league. The players were ordinary workers, bakers, butchers, drivers. But the quality and the will managed the unbelievable, the ascent. 2-3 years it was the only amateur team in the first division until it was professionalized. The home games are played in the gymnasium of the elementary school Ivanec that is always sold out. The club has a very good handball youth, several times secured the championship title in Croatia. Also she made at European level repeatedly attention.
  • In addition to the handball and football players are no less successful. For a small town like Ivanec the premier league is probably a dream, but you have already played in the second league and is currently in the 3rd league, but in the last place (as of Feb. 2006). However, this is still not tragic, because "NK Ivančica " would always stay, as the lower classes of the Croatian leagues are rearranged next year. In order to safely remain in the 3rd league, should be achieved (of 18 teams) at least one 7th Place.
