Ivangorod

Iwangorod (Russian Ивангород; Estonian Jaanilinn; German Johann City) is a city in Leningrad Oblast in Russia with a population of 9854 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ) on an area of 66 km ².

Geography

The city is situated on the right bank of the Narva, which forms the border between Russia and Estonia here. The distance to the eastern Saint Petersburg is about 160 km.

History

The town was founded in 1492 by Ivan III. , Who had built here a fortress. The city bears his name. From 1581-1590 and 1612-1704 Iwangorod was under the rule of Sweden. Until 1649 the town was in its own right managed as a Russian city under the crown of Sweden. From 1649 Iwangorod became a part of the neighboring town of Narva and this remained until 1945 that way.

As in 1919 after the collapse of the Tsarist Empire Estonia gained its independence, Iwangorod came along with Narva Estonia. This was confirmed by the Treaty of Tartu in 1920. Until 1940 it belonged under the name Jaanilinn to Estonia. After the Soviet occupation of Estonia, the city was struck in January 1945, the Leningrad Oblast. Town was chartered Iwangorod again in 1954. During the Soviet period Narva and Iwangorod were twin cities that were in various Union republics.

Since the establishment of Estonia to the EU on 1 May 2004 here, running external border of the European Union.

Attractions

The most important attraction is the Fortress Iwangorod from the time of Ivan III. , Opposite the Estonian Narva Castle on the banks of the Narva.

Traffic

The town lies on the railway line between Tallinn - Saint Petersburg, as well as on the highway A 180 between these two cities.
