Ivar Ekeland ( born July 2, 1944 in Paris ) is a French mathematician of Norwegian descent.

Ekeland studied 1963-1967 at the Ecole Normale Superieure, then was a research assistant at the CNRS and received his PhD in 1970 at Pallu de la Barrière. 1970 to 2003 he was professor at the University of Paris -Dauphine and taught at the same time from 1970 to 1982 at the Ecole Polytechnique. 1989 to 1994 he was president of the University of Paris- Dauphine and from 1975 to 1989 director of the Research Center for Mathematics ( CEREMADE ). Since 2003 he is professor at the University of British Columbia and Director of the Pacific Institute of Mathematical Sciences ( PIMS ). He is since 1995 director of the Institut Finance Dauphine. He has been a visiting professor at the University of Chicago, at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences of New York University, at the ICTP ( International Centre for Theoretical Physics ) in Trieste, at the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa and the University of Texas at Austin.

1975 to 1981 he was Vice- President of the Société Mathématique de France. 1991 to 1994 he was Chairman of the Scientific Council of the Ecole Normale Superieure and 1991-1996 President of the National Council of the Institutes of Technology in France ( IUP). He was 1978 Invited Speaker at the ICM in Helsinki ( Problèmes variationnels non convex ). In 1983 he received the Langevin Prize of the French Academy of Sciences and in 1996 he received the Grand Prize of the Belgian Academy of Sciences. He is a member of the Norwegian and the Austrian Academy of Sciences and an honorary doctorate from the University of Economics and Finance Saint Petersburg, the University of British Columbia and the University of Vienna.

His scientific work is concerned with dynamical systems, calculus of variations, optimization problems, and mathematical economics.

Ivar Ekeland received a number of awards including the Jean Rostand and the d ' Alembert Prize for his popular science works.
