Ivar Jacobson

Ivar Hjalmar Jacobson ( born September 2, 1939 in Ystad ) is a Swedish computer scientist.

Career

Jacobson studied at Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, which he left in 1962 with a degree in electrical engineering. He graduated in 1985 at the Royal Institute of Technology Stockholm His doctoral thesis. The topic of his dissertation were language constructs for large real-time systems.

In 1967, he suggested the use of software components in a new generation of Telephonschaltzentralen the Ericsson Company, in whose development he was involved. In the same context he invented sequence and collaboration diagrams and state machines put one to describe the flow of messages between components.

Ivar Jacobson was one of the founders of the Specification and Description Language (SDL ), which became the standard in the telecommunications industry in 1967. He is also known as a co-inventor of the use cases as a technique for the documentation of requirements for a software system.

In April 1987, Ivar Jacobson left the company and founded the company Ericsson AB Objectory, where he developed around 1992 the software development process OOSE (Object - Oriented Software Engineering ), was formulated in the first model of the use cases.

In October 1995 Rational Software acquired the company AB Objectory Ivar Jacobson and Grady Booch and took along with James Rumbaugh work on the first version of the Unified Modeling Language ( UML) and later at the Rational Unified Process ( RUP). When Rational Software was bought by IBM in 2003, Ivar Jacobson left the company, but remained to him until in May 2004, joined as an expert.
