Ivars Godmanis

Stop the Crisis [ ivars guɐdmanis ] ( born November 27, 1951 in Riga ) is a Latvian physicist and politician. He was from 1990 to 1993 and from 2007 to 2009 Prime Minister of Latvia.

Life

He was born the son of the scientist Teodor Godmanis in Riga. At the University of Riga Godmanis studied physics and earned 1974 a first academic degree (BS ). Then he continued his studies at the Institute for Solid State Physics, University of Latvia, graduating in 1983 with a diploma exam in physics and mathematics from. 1986/1987 graduated Godmanis additional studies at the University of Graz in Austria, and in 1992 received his doctorate in physical sciences. Before and after the stay in Austria Godmanis worked as a research assistant at the University Institute of Solid State Physics in Riga and emerged through multiple scientific publications. To Godmanis initially held clear of the politics and was not a member of the Communist Party. After the Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev began a sign of political change through the task of the claim to rule over the East European States to Godmanis engaged in the Latvian Popular Front was founded in 1988 and its second chairman.

From 1993 to 1998 Godmanis worked in the financial and banking sector. As a member of the Party of Latvijas Cels he was a deputy in the Saeima and 1998-1999 Finance Minister of the Cabinet Vilis Kristopans. In 2004 the party merged LPP / LC, he was chairman along with Ainārs Šlesers. On 20 December 2007, he was following the resignation of Aigars Kalvitis, in whose government he had been Minister of the Interior, Prime Minister again. He joined in February 2009 with his cabinet back. In the same year he was elected to the European Parliament in Brussels and therefore put his party chairmanship temporarily down.

Godmanis is a member of the board of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe. He is a member of the Budget Committee, the Delegation for relations with Belarus and in the Delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly EURO- NEST. Deputy is Godmanis in the Committee on Regional Development and the Delegation to the Parliamentary Cooperation Committees EU -Kazakhstan, EU -Kyrgyzstan and EU-Uzbekistan and for relations with Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Mongolia.

Private life

From the 32 -year marriage to Ramona Godmane come three children. After the divorce Godmanis married in 2011 Ilze Pētersone. Godmanis moderated occasionally a program about the history of rock music in private Latvian radio station SWH Rock. On June 18, 2008 Godmanis suffered in a car accident head injury when his limousine service in Riga collided with a minibus.
