Ivdel

Ivdel (Russian Ивдель ) is a town in Sverdlovsk Oblast (Russia) with good 17,775 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography and climate

Ivdel is the northernmost city of Sverdlovsk Oblast. It is located about 535 kilometers north of the regional capital Yekaterinburg, in the taiga landscape of northern Urals on the eponymous river Ivdel shortly before its confluence with the Loswa. The nearest towns are Severouralsk (65 km southwest) and Volchansk (86 km south). Approximately 60 km west of the border is Ivdel Sverdlovsk Oblast to the Perm region.

Ivdel is the administrative center of the city circle Ivdel ( Iwdelski Gorodskoi okrug ), in addition to the city covers more than 30 villages, spread over a total area of ​​25,000 km ².

History

At the end of the 16th century the first wooden fortress in the Urals was established at the river mouth, the Loswinski gorodok ( Лозьвинский городок ). The village Nikito - Ivdel occupied since 1831.

Since 1925 there are wood processing industry in Ivdel, and here the IwdelLag 1937, a penal camp of the NKVD was founded. Exist as a prison camp for dangerous criminals parts of the former NKVD camp still to this day.

Economy

In the region around Ivdel there are manganese deposits, as well as iron ore, copper, bauxite, and gold is mined. In the city itself there are wood industry, but steadily losing its importance since the 1990s. Based in Ivdel is also the management of gas pipelines in the Sverdlovsk and Tyumen.
