Iwaki Province (1868)

Iwaki (Japanese磐 城 国, Iwaki no kuni ), also Banshu (磐 州) was a province of Japan during the early Meiji period.

It extended over the eastern half of present-day Fukushima Prefecture and the southern part of present-day Miyagi Prefecture. Along with the neighboring province of west Iwashiro it formed the central part of the Fukushima prefecture. Specifically, among the present-day counties Date and Adachi in the north to Iwashiro, Higashishirakawa and Nishishirakawa in the south to Iwaki ( with the exception of the western part of the village Taishin (now Shirakawa ) the to Iwashiro belonged ) to the Abukuma in the middle as a border river. At the neighboring province to the north were the Rikuzen today located in Miyagi Prefecture counties Watari, Igu, Katta, and the cities of Shiroishi and Kakuda.

In the census 1872 ( Jinshin Koseki ) 348 608 inhabitants were counted in Iwaki.

History

718 of the province of Michinoku ( Mutsu ) was separated the provinces of Iwase and Iwaki, but they were already incorporated a few years later. The field of this former province was about the same as that of the later Iwaki province, except that it was smaller and did not extend to the basin of Abukuma.

On January 19, 1869 ( Meiji 1/12/7 ) the provinces of Iwaki, Iwashiro, Rikuchu (Eng. " Central Mutsu ' ) and Rikuzen (Eng. " front Mutsu " ) were separated from the province of Mutsu.
