Iwama (Ibaraki)

Iwama (Japanese岩 间 町, machi ) was a 100 km north- east of Tokyo located municipality. It lay near the city of Mito, Ibaraki Prefecture in Japan.

History

On March 19, 2006 Iwama merged together with the city Tomobe the new city Kasama.

In 1942 Morihei Ueshiba, founder of aikido, in this area put to rest and moved to Iwama, where he built a dojo and Aiki Shrine ( Aiki Jinja ). Today's dojo in 1945 completed before the end of the Second World War. Here he further developed his aikido, which he later called Takemusu Aiki. Since 1946, here accompanied him his student Morihiro Saitō until his death. Saitō took over the management of the Iwama dojo - after the death of the founder. He founded the Iwama Ryu ( " Iwama - style "), which should preserve Ueshiba's techniques in their originality. After his death, the leadership of the dojo went back to the Aikikai Hombu Dojo in Tokyo in Iwama.
