Izena Island

Izena -jima (Japanese伊 是 名 岛) is an island of Okinawa islands of the Ryukyu Island chain.

Geography

Izena -jima has an area of 14.16 km ² and is surrounded by a coral reef. 1.2 km south of the island Yanaha -jima and 500 m east lies the island Urugami -jima. Up until the 80s or 90s also was still 300 meters west of the island Yanoshita -jima, which was then, however, connected by Neulandgewinning with Izena -jima and the peninsula. Between Iheya -jima and Izena -jima Gushikawa -shima also is 2.2 km to the north.

All these islands, except Iheya -jima belong administratively to the municipality Izena, where Izena -jima is the only inhabited. 31 March 2011, lived on the island in 1591 inhabitants in 769 households. The main economic sectors of the community are agriculture, mainly sugar cane and rice, and fishing.
