Izium

Isjum (Ukrainian Ізюм; Russian Изюм ) is a county -level city in eastern Ukraine Kharkiv Oblast with more than 50,000 inhabitants ( 2013).

History

The town was first mentioned in documents in 1571. The name comes from the name of the river Isjum Isjumez and an important medieval ford ( Isjumfurt ), which lay on the strategically important connection between Moscow and the Crimea. In the 17th and 18th centuries the city was a site of the Cossack Regiment (fortified " Isjum - line " against the Crimean Tatars ), and in the 19th century, the city Isjum was the administrative center of the homonymous governorate Ujesd in Kharkov.
