Ä°zmir Clock Tower

The Clock Tower of Izmir ( Turkish İzmir Saat 's Tower ) is a 1901 erbauter historic clock tower at Konak Square in Konak district of Smyrna, now Izmir in Turkey. It is located in close proximity to Yalı Mosque.

History

Designed by the Levantine French architect Raymond Charles Péré - tower was erected in 1901 to mark the 25th anniversary of accession to the throne of Abdulhamid II (r. 1876-1909 ). The 25 meter high tower with an iron and lead design and in high Ottoman architecture designed is surrounded by four circular fountains designed as Şadırvan. The columns are inspired by Moorish motifs. The clock itself was a gift from the German Emperor Wilhelm II (r. 1888-1918 ).

The clock tower was depicted on the obverse of the Turkish 500 lira banknotes - 1983-1989.

In the former Balkan provinces of the Ottoman Empire, especially in today's Serbian, Bosnian and Montenegrin cities like Belgrade, Prijepolje, Sarajevo, Banja Luka, Gradačac and Stara Varos, there are similar clock towers continue and Sahat Kula are called (derived from Turkish seed kulesi significantly Clock Tower. )
