Izumi Maki (athlete)

Izumi Maki (Japanese真 木 和, Maki Izumi, Izumi for Marriage Yamaoka (山冈 和, Yamaoka Izumi ), born December 10, 1968 in Namikata, Ehime Prefecture ) is a former Japanese long-distance runner.

In 1991, she was the fastest locals in the Japanese championship in the 10,000 m and came at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo over the same distance on the 20th Place.

The following year she presented the 10,000 m with a national record at 31:40,38 min, was national champion and finished at the Olympic Games in Barcelona the 12th Place.

In 1993, she did not come, again over 10,000 m starting at the World Championships in Stuttgart on the 17th square. A month later, she set a world record in the 20,000 - meter track running with 1:06:48,8 h.

In the following years she turned definitively to the longer distances. In 1994 she won the half marathon competition of the Gold Coast Marathon. In 1995 she came at the Sapporo Half Marathon finish line first, but was disqualified for doping and banned for three months.

With a victory at the Nagoya Marathon 1996 she qualified for the marathon in the Olympic Games in Atlanta, where she was twelfth.

After she finished her sporting career and was a trainer. In 2003, she married, and some time later she brought forth a son.

Izumi Maki started for the corporate team of Wacoal. Currently, she is part of the advisory board of Fujita Running Academy of her former coach Nobuyuki Fujita.
