J. C. Squire

Sir John Collings Squire (* April 2, 1884, † December 20, 1958 ) was a British poet, writer, historian and influential magazine editors of the period after the First World War.

Life and work

Although Squire was a poet also be included in the published by Edward Marsh volumes " Georgian Poetry " (year books 1916-1917, 1918-1919, 1920-1922 ) - but already in the period before the First World War he worked as a literary critic. During his time as editor of London Mercury (1919-1934) he then had a decisive influence on British literature.

Politically, he wandered - at times a member of a Marxist organization - ever further to the right up to the environment of Oswald Mosely and his "British Union of Fascists ."
