J. D. Sumner

John Daniel Sumner ( born November 19, 1924 in Lakeland, Florida, † November 16, 1998 in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina), almost always known as JD Sumner, was an American singer and songwriter, mainly in the gospel field. He became famous primarily for its exceptionally deep bass voice as well as a musical companion of Elvis Presley. By 1984 he was regarded as the singer with the lowest voice in the world ( according to the Guinness Book of he reached World Records the song Blessed Assurance, the frequency of 32.7 Hz).

Career

His singing career began JD Sumner mid-1940s in local gospel quartets in Florida. Then in 1949 he was engaged by the Sunshine Boys who were based in Atlanta and has already enjoyed national popularity. With this ensemble, Sumner took several hundred songs on ( Langworth Transcriptions ). In 1954, in a plane crash the bass singer for the Blackwood Brothers (Gospel quartet from Memphis ) was killed, Sumner left with a heavy heart the Sunshine Boys, we would just sing with the Black Woods already very well known. Besides his duties as a singer Sumner developed a different talent. He wrote several hundred gospel songs, which were very successfully moved part. After several successful years with this formation Sumner and James Blackwood in 1963 bought the stamps music publishing including the associated quartet. 1965 Sumner joined as bass singer for the Stamps Quartet and took over its management. He later renamed the Quartet JD Sumner and the Stamps Quartet.

The group itself was successful, but not enough to the popularity of the bass, which he had acquired principally through the support during the many live concerts of Elvis Presley, zoom. Also on the studio recordings he was there. The collaboration lasted from 1971 until 1977. On several posthumously published DVDs Elvis and Sumner are seen in samples and listen. They had a close relationship, and Sumner left Elvis occasionally in gospel sessions the bass part, but like trumped him in the final chord by one or two octaves. Even at the last concert of Elvis Presley on June 26, 1977, JD Sumner and his quartet on stage. Then he released the single Elvis has left the building.

After the death of Elvis Presley Sumner initially took a break from the stage, asked him to his former companions from the times of the gospel quartets to sing with a new Legends Gospel Quartet. He participated in and sang from 1980 with James Blackwood, Hovie Lister, Jake Hess and Rosie Rozell as The Masters V, which also received a Grammy Award the same. After some personnel changes this quartet Sumner called the formation around in October 1987 and entered again as JD Sumner and the Stamps. Although he was probably known to most music fans through his connection to Elvis, Sumner remained until his death of his favorite music - the Southern Gospel - faithful.
