History

Before the J. Edgar Hoover Building was built, the FBI had its offices in the building of the Justice Department. In 1939, however, was a request for a building of its own. 1941, the first plans for the new FBI building were presented; but these were displaced by the Second World War. Later, in 1962, the U.S. Congress approved the new FBI building. Its design was completed in 1964 by the architect Charles Murphy. Construction began on 6 December 1967. Starting 1974, the first FBI staff moved into the new building. However, the official inauguration was held by President Gerald Ford until September 30, 1975.
