J. H. Parry

John Horace Parry ( born April 26, 1914 in Harmondsworth, Birmingham, † August 25 1982 in Cambridge ( Massachusetts)) was a British historian and professor at Harvard University ( Gardiner Professor of Oceanic History and Affairs ).

Parry studied at Cambridge University (Clare College), where he was in 1938 a doctorate in history. Previously, he worked for several years at Harvard University. 1940 to 1945 he was an officer in the Royal Navy, most recently as Lieutenant - Commander. From 1945 he was a tutor in history and in 1946 Lecturer at Clare College, Cambridge. 1949 to 1956 he was professor of history at the newly founded University College of the West Indies in Kingston ( Jamaica). In 1954/55 he was a visiting professor at Harvard, and in 1956 principal at University College, Ibadan in Nigeria. In 1960 he went as a principal of the University College of Swansea, and in 1963 he became Vice-Chancellor of the University of Wales in Cardiff. In 1965 he became a professor at Harvard.

He dealt with discovery and colonial history (especially Spain and South America) and maritime history.

At Harvard, he also gave courses in sailing. He was married to Joyce Carter since 1938 and had three daughters and a son.

He was MBE (1942, for Meritorious Service in the Royal Navy, in which he was torpedoed three times) and Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George, and Commander of the Order of Alfonso of Castile. In 1964 he became an honorary doctorate from the University of Ceara.
