J. Horace Round

John Horace Round, known as J. Horace Round ( born February 22, 1854 in Hove, Essex, † June 25, 1928 in Brighton ) was a British medieval historian and genealogist.

Life and work

Round came from a family of bankers in Colchester, was innately financially independent and studied History (Modern History) at the University of Oxford ( Balliol College). There, the Regius Professor William Stubbs was one of his teachers. He was Deputy Lieutenant and Lord of the manor of the county of Essex, which he - though born in Sussex - regarded as his true home.

He was considered an authority on the Norman period in England and genealogy questions for the British aristocracy and in 1914 an honorary advisor to the British royal family in genealogy questions. He also advised the House of Lords in matters of coronation ceremony. He gave the Domesday Book for Essex out what was seen as a significant historical achievement in which he clarified many obscure points, and delivered numerous articles for The Complete Peerage, and the first edition of the Dictionary of National Biography.

He never married, was often sick and was known as contentious among historians and Genealogenkollegen. In 1905 he became an honorary doctorate from the University of Edinburgh.
