J. Metzler

J. Metzler was a German artist whose identity is unknown, despite the notoriety of his works. He created in the late 19th and early 20th century, a significant number of landscape paintings. The focus of his work lies in the period around 1910.

Work

His works show the whole landscape diversity of Germany from the North and Baltic Sea coast to the Alps, but there is a clear emphasis in the area of the Lower Rhine. Metzler's works are in the tradition of Early Netherlandish landscape painting and were influenced by French Impressionism. Especially the former enjoyed great popularity of the century, and it is believed that works were on special request of the buyer.

Identity

Because it is in spite of the recognition of the work so far no one has managed to give details about the artist, it can be considered likely that it is " J. Metzler " is a pseudonym. One clue is that the artist with the suffix " Ddf " signed some of his pictures, which is probably an abbreviation of Dusseldorf. The style is clearly assigned to the perimeter of the Düsseldorf School of Painting, also the focus of the motifs can be situate on the Lower Rhine.

A thesis is that it is the artist recorded in the lexicon Thieme -Becker Düsseldorf painter Johann Jungbluth (1860-1912) is, who used other pseudonyms such as Johann Sander. Concrete evidence does not exist. As fiction, the addition of the name Jan or Johann may apply.
