J. Peter Schwalm

J. Peter Schwalm (* 1970 in Frankfurt am Main ) is a German composer and music producer of the new in music, Ambient, radio play, film, theater, ballet and electronic music acts and especially through his work with the British a broad public musician Brian Eno is known. He lives and works in Frankfurt am Main.

Life and work

Schwalm studied between 1989 and 1991 four semesters of Music with a major in percussion at the Music Workshop in Frankfurt am Main. In 1993, Schwalm founded the experimental electro-jazz project Slop Shop. He published his first works of this project on the Frankfurt label Infracom.

Schwalm founded in 1996, the label Poets Club Records, which passed into Christian Kessler's possession in 2000. On this label Schwalm published numerous 12 " maxi singles and compilations in the field of electronica, nu jazz and drum and bass. Schwalm released his first CD at Poets Club Records. This first CD of his project Slop Shop, titled Macro Delia, attracted the attention of various musicians such as Brian Eno, Peter Kruder, Ryuichi Sakamoto up.

Brian Eno came forward then with Schwalm to offer him a joint collaboration which culminated in a joint appearance a few months later together in the Art and Exhibition Hall of the Federal Republic of Germany. Involved also were Holger Czukay, bassist Raoul Walton and drummer Jem Atai. As a result, working Schwalm and Eno in the following years to a variety of projects and published two CDs Music for Onmyo - Ji (2000 JVC Victor ) and Drawn from Life (2001 Venture / Virgin Music UK ).

Furthermore designed Schwalm and Brian Eno in 2001 a joint, multi-channel sound installation in the volcanic crater Volcan del Cuervo in Lanzarote. In an interview with the German music magazine Keyboards, Schwalm explains the approach and the concept of this project. To promote the album Drawn from Life to Schwalm and Brian Eno embarked in 2002 on a tour that took them to Japan, Spain and Portugal. Schwalm was also involved in the project initiated by Bono Artists against AIDS Worldwide titled what's going on. In 2003, Schwalm and Brian Eno worked on the soundtrack to Nicolas Winding Refn 's film Fear X, which in collaboration with the writer Hubert Selby, Jr. and cinematographer Larry Smith was born.

In 2006 participated in the Schwalm - Wagner Reloaded Project part which processes the music of Richard Wagner's new in various projects. This project was premiered in 2006 on the occasion of the dot Festival in Kristiansand / Norway, together with the Kristiansand Symphony Orchestra. Other contributors were, among others, Eivind Aarset, Audun Kleive, Lars Danielsson, Bugge Wesseltoft and Jan Bang.

In 2006, Schwalm published the first CD under his own name. Musikain works with different musical styles, including different vocalists. Have participated, among others, as Gastvokalisten Brian Eno, the Norwegian singer Kari Kleiv and the British singer Imogen Heap on the production.

Furthermore Schwalm worked on productions for, among other things, the new plant; a concert series of the NDR, for which composers such as Karlheinz Stockhausen, Pierre Boulez, Krzysztof Penderecki and György Ligeti new material composed and aufführten.

Schwalm composed music for a production of the choreographer James Sutherland on behalf of the Stuttgart Ballet, entitled Impaired Ground.

Also Schwalm wrote the music for the play Do not look now on behalf of the Sheffield Theatres for the Lyceum Theatre in Sheffield, which was also performed at the Lyric Theatre Hammersmith in London. The screenplay for this controlled Nell Leyshon at; Directed by Lucy Bailey.

In the radio play Schwalm made ​​its appearance for the first time in 2008. Together with the violinist Nell Catchpole he has conducted workshops at the Guildhall School for Music and Drama in London.

Since 2008, Schwalm working more and more together with guitarist Eivind Aarset. They had joint appearances on the spot Festival in Norway, on the Enjoy Jazz Festival in Mannheim and in Rolf Liebermann Studio in Hamburg with a concert of the new plant.

In 2013 he was commissioned by the British ensemble Icebreaker, to create a new piece of music from the power plant bisherigem musical material. The premiere of the project, entitled Power Plant Uncovered: A Future Past, Museum will be held in London in January 2014 Science, will be followed by a tour with concerts in the UK and Ireland.
