J. R. Celski

John Robert Celski (also JR Celski, born July 17, 1990 in Monterey, California) is an American Shorttracker.

Career

The first international appearance Celskis was at the Junior World Cup 2006 in Miercurea Ciuc Romania. He reached over 500 meters the finals and won the bronze medal in the victory of the German Robert Seifert. As he and the other two routes, 1000 m and 1500 m, ended on good places, he qualified for the Super Final of the best athletes in the World Junior Championships over 1500 meters. He was sixth in total he managed the eighth rank.

Earlier, Celski had been traded as a major new American talent and as successor to Apolo Anton Ohno, especially since he, like Ohno was a member of the same Inline Skating Club. However, he was also in the following season, neither in the World Cup still at other major events used in the 2007/ 08 season he was no World Cup competition. For Celski started for the second time at a Junior World Championships, this time in Italian Bolzano. Here he was able to achieve three fourth places, yet it remained a medal denied. In the overall classification he missed the podium in fifth scarce.

Only in the short track speed skating World Cup 2008/ 09 he succeeded in the first use of the highest competition series and once he had fourth over 1500 meters his first final placement. Besides, he was already in his second race with the American squadron in Vancouver World Cup winner, he triumphed together with Ohno, Jeff Simon and Anthony Lobello.

In the short track speed skating World Championships 2009 in Vienna Celski surprised with the profits of the gold medal over 3000 m, and with the season over 5000 m. He also won bronze in 1000 and 1500 m, and with 65 points silver in the overall standings. At the Olympic Trials in the United States in September 2009, Celski was able to reach the second place in the overall standings, but a serious injury retired in the final of the 500 meters with a fall to, after he had five months to complete a stringent rehab program and a return for short track speed skating sports long stood in question. Just in time for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver Celski was fit again and won the 1500m and with the relay bronze medal. At the race over 1000m he was disqualified after a disability of Francois Hamelin.

Only a few weeks after the games started Celski at the short track speed skating World Championships 2010 in Sofia. He reached after winning all heats, the final of the 1500m. There, however, he was beaten and missed the three South Koreans at the end of fourth barely a medal. During the heats over 500 meters Celski was involved in a crash of Canadian Francois -Louis Tremblay and later disqualified. In the final over 1000 meters, he won the bronze medal behind Lee Ho -Suk and Kwak Yoon- Gy. In the overall standings, he missed again barely a medal in fourth.

After the World Cup Celski was known to take a year off from the short track speed skating. During this time he produced for the Northwest Hip Hop scene a documentary entitled " The Other Side". The premiere of the film took place on May 31, 2013 at the Seattle International Film Festival.

In summer 2011, Celski came back to short track speed skating. However, he had to pause again in December 2011 after an injury to the ankle. This led, ultimately, to refusal to participate in the short track speed skating World Cup in 2012. In September 2012, he won the U.S. Championships and secured himself a spot in the World Cup squad. At the first World Cup in Calgary Celski was the 500 m run as first Shorttracker under 40 seconds and presented with 39.937 seconds set a new world record. With this performance, he also won the World Cup. However, it remained his only win of the season. However, he could reach even three second and three third places.

Celski won the silver medal at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi with the relay. In the 2014 World Cup, he was in Montreal in 3000 - m- Super Final champion and reached in the all around and over 500 m silver.

Private

After his birth in Monterey, California, where his father Robert Celski served in the United States Army, Celski grew up in Federal Way, Washington. His father is Polish and his mother Filipino descent. John Celski has two brothers, Chris and David. He attended Lakewood High School in Lakewood and later the Todd Beamer High School in Federal Way, which he completed successfully. After the 2010 Olympic Games Celski began to study at Berkeley at the University of California, but the study broke down again a short time later and began for the art scene in Seattle to work as a promoter. Celski now lives in Salt Lake City.
