J. Tinsley Oden

J. Tinsley Oden ( born December 25, 1936 in Alexandria ( Louisiana) ) is an American engineer scientist. He is known for applications of the finite element method (FEM ) in mechanics. He is a professor at the Cockrell School of Engineering of the University of Texas at Austin.

Oden studied civil engineering at Louisiana State University with a degree in 1959. He was in 1962 at Oklahoma State University in Jan J. Tuma doctorate (Analysis of Plate -Beam Structures ). He then taught at Oklahoma State University and became a professor at the University of Alabama in Huntsville, where he led the Faculty of Mechanics. In 1973 he went to the University of Texas. He is there not only professor of mechanics, but also for mathematics and computer science. Oden is a founding director of the Institute for Computational Engineering and Sciences ( ICES) at the University of Texas at Austin (founded in 2003).

He was a visiting professor at various universities in the U.S., UK and Brazil.

Oden is concerned with computer-aided numerical Mechanics ( Computational Mechanics ), numerical solution of partial differential equations and applied mathematics. The examined applications it ranging from fluid dynamics to dynamic simulations the treatment of cancer with lasers, molecular dynamics and simulation of semiconductor manufacturing processes. He is the author of over 700 technical articles and reports and the author and editor of some 50 books.

In 1992 he received the Von Karman Medal and 1996, the Timoshenko Medal. He is an honorary member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME ) and an honorary doctorate from the Ecole Normale Superieure de Cachan and the Technical University of Lisbon and Krakow. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering. He received the Presidential Citation from the University of Texas and is a Knight of the Order of Academic Palms.

He is the editor of Computer Methods in Applied Mechanics and Engineering.

His doctoral J. N. Reddy belongs.
