Jaap Meijer

Jacob " Jaap " Meijer ( born April 20, 1905 in Amsterdam, † December 2, 1943 at sea ) was a Dutch racing cyclist and World Champion.

1924 won Jaap Meijer at the Olympic Games in Paris, the silver medal in the sprint, behind the Frenchman Lucien Michard. The following year he became world champion in the sprint of the amateurs in Amsterdam. 1926 Meijer stepped over to the professionals. In the following six years he was at the national championships in the sprint second four times and third twice.

1932 ended Jaap Meijer his career and opened a bike shop in Amsterdam. In 1943 he drove in unexplained circumstances in the Belgian border community of the sea with his car into the water and drowned. It was suspected that Meijer had collaborated with the German occupation; both his family and his teammates from the ASC Olympia refuse to this day to talk about him.
