Jabez G. Sutherland

Jabez Gridley Sutherland ( born October 6, 1825 Van Buren, Onondaga County, New York, † November 20, 1902 in Berkeley, California ) was an American lawyer, judge and politician from Michigan.

Career

Sutherland completed his preparatory studies, studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1848. Then he started in Saginaw, Michigan to practice and was from 1848 to 1849 Attorney in Saginaw County. Then he was in 1850 and 1867 a delegate to the state constitutional conventions in 1853 and deputy in the House of Representatives from Michigan. Sutherland held from 1863 until his resignation in 1871, when he ran for the U.S. Congress, the Office of the Judge in the 10th Judicial District of Michigan. He was elected as a Democrat to the 42nd U.S. Congress, where he represented the 6th Congressional District of Michigan. He served on the U.S. House of Representatives March 4, 1871 until March 3, 1873; In 1872, he did not present himself for re-election.

Sutherland moved in 1873 to Salt Lake City, where he began his work as a lawyer again. He was in 1889 a member of the faculty of the University of Utah and later in the years 1894 and 1895, President of the Territorial Bar Association. Then he moved in 1897 to California, where he died in Berkeley. He was buried in Mount Olivet Cemetery on Salt Lake City.
