Jabiru mycteria

The Jabiru ( Jabiru mycteria ) is a Stork America, which occurs from Mexico to Argentina. He is the only member of the genus Jabiru ( Hellmayr, 1906).

Appearance

The Jabiru is up to 1.20 m tall, its wingspan is about 2.60 m, the beak is up to 30 cm long. He has a predominantly white plumage, neck, head and beak are black. Remarkable are the yellow in the female stork eyes, while those of the male bird's dark.

Way of life

The Jabiru lives in large groups near rivers and ponds. It feeds on fish, molluscs and amphibians, and occasionally reptiles and small mammals.

It builds its nest on tall trees. Breeding season is August-September. The nest consists of 2-4 eggs. Both parents take turns birds in the breeding business.
