Jabra Ibrahim Jabra

Dschabra Ibrahim Dschabra ( جبرا إبراهيم جبرا, Ǧabrā Ibrāhīm Ǧabrā; * 1920 in Bethlehem, Palestine, † 1994 in Baghdad, Iraq) was a Palestinian writer.

Biography

Dschabra Ibrahim Dschabra comes from a Christian family and spent his childhood in Bethlehem, his youth in Jerusalem. In 1939 he received a scholarship to study in England. He studied first in Exeter, then at Cambridge until 1934 English literature.

Shortly thereafter, he went into exile in Iraq and taught at a university in Baghdad. Later he went to the USA and taught at Harvard and Berkeley. He worked in the information department of the Iraqi oil company. He married in Baghdad and lived there until his death. One of his sons lives in the USA, the other in New Zealand.

Importance

Dschabra Ibrahim Dschabra is an important Arab poets and writers. In addition to his poems and novels he has written numerous translations from English into Arabic, including Samuel Beckett's Waiting for Godot, William Faulkner's Sound and the Fury, Oscar Wilde's The Happy Prince and Other Fairy Tales, and numerous works of William Shakespeare, including Hamlet, King Lear, Macbeth, Coriolanus, The Tempest and Twelfth Night, to literary secondary literature.
