Jabrayil District

Cəbrayıl (also Jabrail ) is a rayon in the southwest of Azerbaijan. Capital of the district is the city Cəbrayıl. The district is bordered to the south by the Iranian province of Ardabil. Because of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict since August 1993 large parts of the district occupied by the Armenian Armed Forces, the capital. The Armenians call the area Jrakn.

Geography

The rayon has an area of 1,050 km ². The district is located in the southeast of the small Caucasus and is very mountainous. The Aras River forms the border with Iran.

Population

The rayon had 70,300 inhabitants in 2009 according to Azerbaijani information. Parts of the population have fled after the invasion of the Armenian army from the district to other areas of Azerbaijan.

Economy and Transport

Before the occupation was operated in the region livestock and vineyards, as well as cotton grown and processed. Along the Aras the railway line from Baku goes according to Nakhchivan, which is currently out of order. The road and rail connection from Armenia by the district to Iran but are in operation and important.

Attractions

In the district of the ancient bridges of Khudaferin above the Aras River. In the village Khudayarli is an old watchtower, in village Shikhlar a mausoleum. Both are of archaeological interest.
