Jabuka (island)

Jabuka ( literally, " apple ") is a cone-shaped, uninhabited volcanic island with an area of 0.22 km ² in the Adriatic Sea west of Vis ( Lissa ).

She is a rock, which rises 97 meters from the sea and off all sea routes is, but in recent times is the goal of many sailors. As the rock contains much magnetite, compasses do not work in the vicinity of the island.

The shore is steep and difficult to access, even in calm weather and from the southwest side. On the island lives a species endemic black lizards ( Podarcis melisellensis pomoensis ) and strictly protected species endemic Knapweed (Centaurea Centaurea jabukensis and crithmifolia ). Both belong to the daisy family (Asteraceae). Round the sea is rich in fish, especially on bream. In 1958 the island was declared a natural monument.
