Jac. P. Thijsse

He was a primary school teacher, and in 1891 rector of a primary school on the island of Texel. There he learned to love nature. Since his wife was homesick for her native city of Amsterdam, the pair returned in 1893 to go back there. He learned Eli Heiman know who shared his love of nature.

When the city of Amsterdam in 1904 wanted to leave the heath Naardermeer in Naarden backfilling of urban refuse to Thijsse and Heiman's determined to resist. They founded the Association for the Protection of Nature Monuments in the Netherlands, which still exists now as Natuurmonumenten and is the oldest conservation organization in the country. Between 1906 and 1938 he wrote the lyrics of the highly successful Verkade albums on nature themes. These were albums of the company Verkade, in which you could glue the color images, the cocoa powder and other product packages beilegte this their biscuits.

Because of his contribution to the conservation and primary education in this area he was awarded the University of Amsterdam on September 18, 1922 an honorary doctorate in biology.
