Life

Malczewski grew up in an impoverished middle-class family and was initially taught by his parents. At age 13, he was sent to the estate of an uncle. In 1871 he moved to Kraków, where he attended high school and was a visiting student at the School of Fine Arts, the later Academy Krakow, works. Its first director, the famous historical painter Jan Matejko, Malczewski recognized the talent and persuaded him to take the same study art, which he then continued at the Ecole nationale supérieure des beaux -arts de Paris and Henri Lehmann. In 1896 he returned as a professor at the Krakow Academy back ( to 1900 and again from 1912 to 1921 ). From 1912 to 1914 he was rector of the university. In 1897 he was one of the founders of the Krakow Artists Association Sztuka.

Malczewski first painted rural genre paintings and realistic historical paintings in the style of Romanticism in predominantly dark colors under the influence of Arthur Grottgers. Around 1890 he began to turn to the symbolism, but the content remained faithful to historical themes. Among his most famous paintings include Śmierć Ellenai ( The Death of Helena, 1883), Wigilia na Syberii (Christmas Eve in Siberia, 1892), Melancholia ( melancholy, 1890-1894 ) and Bledne koło ( The vicious circle, 1895-1897 ). In addition, he painted a series of self-portraits.

Despite his numerous stays abroad (France, Germany, Austria, Italy, Greece, Turkey) most influenced him, the Polish art and folklore. He was around the turn of the century a central figure in the movement Young Poland through his work.
