Jack C. Haldeman II

Jack Carroll " Jay" Haldeman II ( born December 18, 1941 † January 1, 2002 in Gainesville, Florida) was an American biologist and science-fiction writer. He was the older brother of science fiction author Joe Haldeman.

Biography

Jack Haldeman studied environmental engineering and biology at the University of Oklahoma and graduated successfully at Johns Hopkins University. During his academic career, he worked on parasitology, did field studies of whales in the Canadian Arctic, studies on the greenhouse effect and coordinated the design of a website and CD on agriculture in Florida. The tapeworm Hymenolepis haldemani is named after him.

Haldeman has published over 100 short stories; his first Garden of Eden was published in December 1971 in the magazine Fantastic. He has been known to deal in the context of science fiction with sports themes, such as in 1977, published in Asimov 's Science Fiction Magazine History Home Team Advantage. His high steel, a collaboration with Jack Dann was nominated for the 1982 Nebula Award.

1971 Haldeman member of the Science Fiction Writers of America and subsequently started eight SF conventions. He was married to the novelist Barbara Delaware Place, with whom he also published works together.

He died of cancer at the Hospice of North Central Florida in Gainesville.
